My First Safari

Here are a few pictures from Akagera National Park, in Rwanda's eastern province. I went there yesterday with my folks and a couple of friends from PSF. A few days before we went, I asked ex-pats in Kigali if a trip to Akagera was worthwhile. Many advised me to go with low expectations. I took that advice to heart and told myself I would be happy if I could just see some giraffes. Well, giraffes we did see...many! We also saw umteen clans of baboons, a huge herd of cape buffalo, wort hogs, zebra, impala, and hippos. The giraffes were so elegant when they ran and seemed to spend more time gliding in the air than with their feet on the ground. The wort hogs win the cutest award because they're very shy creatures and like to trot through tall grass in a single file line, with only their brush tails visible. Our guide told us the park was infested with snakes as well, particular the Black Mamba and huge pythons. He said he once saw a python devouring a baby impala. That got me so scared that I almost vomited on his foot, although I secretly wanted to see one on the road or in a tree, from the safety of our car of course.

So while Akagera is not a huge game park, I still really enjoyed it, and so did everyone else. This is just build-up for our real safari adventure: 4 days in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth at the end of June. Woooooooo!
